EXECUTIVE
SUMMARY Film
and television are arguably the most powerful and widely consumed of all media
and are used to inform, entertain, and express ideas, 24 hours a day across the
world. Through the production of creative, accessible and cinematic
documentaries, The Rainbow Collective intends “to
raise awareness and help in the eradication of social injustice across the world
through the power of film.” Both
within the UK and internationally, we will allow people, who often feel they
have no voice, to tell their stories to a worldwide and ever-more socially aware
audience. Over several years, film and television audiences have begun to turn
to real life stories, as seen with Fahrenheit 911, Touching the Void and Big
Brother. In
the process of it’s making, the production of our work serves another purpose.
To date, we have been working primarily with young people and issues of
children’s rights and by allowing people from seriously disadvantaged and
under-represented groups to speak about their lives and their feelings, the
process offers a source of therapy. The knowledge that the film-makers, and
therefore an audience, are interested in their situation is often a new feeling
for many of the people with whom we have been making films. As
a Community Interest Company (or CIC), we operate as a “more than profit”
social enterprise. Profits from feature length documentaries by The Rainbow
Collective will be used to help the subjects of the films. This income stream is
becoming ever more reliable as documentary feature films are becoming a staple
of cinemas in the UK and USA, and, specifically, we will be working with
mainstream distributors that will see our work put into cinemas and sold on DVD. The
process of film production offers many opportunities for training at every level
and it is central to The Rainbow Collective’s philosophy that each major
production shall include a substantial training element for young, aspiring
film-makers with their own stories to tell. In partnership with our freelance
associates in the industry we are already successfully showing the ability to
mentor and train students on set in new and innovative ways. In addition to this
on-set mentoring, we intend to link up with councils and community groups to
offer basic entry level training for disadvantaged young people. The
final major strand of The Rainbow Collective is the curation of festivals and
events highlighting and promoting films on the subjects of human rights and
global justice. In this capacity, we have been commissioned by universities,
colleges and film festivals to show our films and also to arrange seminars and
discussions with major Non Governmental Organisations (NGO’s) and charities to
debate the issues raised. The
potential for significant profits within the film industry is well known and as
a social enterprise, The Rainbow Collective believes that these profits should
do more than pay over inflated salaries to big-name actors, directors and
producers. It is our intention to run a healthy, constantly growing business but
one in which profits can be used to good effect both in our own community and
those in which we work abroad.
As well as the profits from feature length cinematic documentaries being
returned to the subjects of the films, extra incomes for smaller, more profit
intensive commission based projects can be used to finance the training schemes
in the community. Our
mission is enduring and in a world that seems so much smaller due to ease of
travel and global media communications, there are still so many big issues that
need to be addressed. At The Rainbow Collective, we will be working to play our
part in helping to make the world we all share a better place and we hope that
you will join us and support us in our efforts. Very
best wishes Richard York
